Welcome to Macrobiana!
(The homeland of Selene Wildebees.)
Important towns & cities:
Celesteville: The capitol of the country was founded by the French, but due to a large chunk of its inhabitants being of Boer descent, it is also known under the name Hemelstad.
Hannosport: The county's most important harbour city. It is located at the same river delta as Prester's Church, the capitol of Kogana.
Solomon: Located at the edge of the Mountains of the Moon, this city is the centre of Macrobiana's mining industry.
Wallace: Located at the shore of Zoology Bay, this town was named after Alfred Russel Wallace, the naturalist famous for discovering the principle of evolution via natural selection. Here you can also find the headquarters of the Grommet Institute for Wildlife Preservation.
Other important landmarks
Elephant Plain: Macrobiana's largest savannah region, hence the elephant on the country's flag.
Pride National Park: A curious looking rock structure standing alone in the middle of the savannah is a popular destination for photo safaris.
Gnu Valley: Gained the sad notoriety of having been a major battle ground in the Ostrich War. (For example, it's were this incident happened.) Due to General Mbuni not being content with Kogana's own mines in the Mountains of Kong, his invasion army crossed the Alea River in this region, in order to capture Salomon.
Aside from the usual war-related after-effects, war ostriches gone feral are still causing huge problems there.
Perhaps an unpopular regime in that nation “invited in” Kogana, much to everyone’s misery?
Macrobiana then armed and assisted the opposition, which turned into an excuse for Kogana to carve off everything west of Celesteville (in order to secure those mines, as noted above) those plains being ripe ground for the dreaded Ostrich Korps.
I see Burunda being neutral/playing both sides until Zamunda stepped in (again, with heavy, mechanized divisions and air superiority) at the end to hammer Kogana into the ground, at which point they were glad to associate with the winning side.
Let me know your thoughts on that proposed narrative!
Buranda would have been neutral only in the sense of not being a direct participant in the conflict. They are not a strong military power in the region, but are a major trading partner with Zamunda. Buranda is Zamunda's main access to the sea, so they tend to have aligned interests.
Furthermore, Buranda being part of the Commonwealth, has strong ties with the UK. They host support facilities for the Royal Navy, and during the war it was a common sight to have a submarine or frigate parked in the bay. Mostly the UK was flying the flag to keep Kogana's eyes off Burnada
Gotcha. While not a puppet state of Zamunda, they're clearly on the same page.
I guess the question would then be what prompts Zamunda to climb off the sidelines? Surely not "the human toll"? And I don't see Kogana from straight up attacking Zamunda unprompted, unlike some of their weaker neighbors.
Wow, the map has initiated quite a discussion here!
All I can contribute to that (at the moment at least) is that I am really enjoying your musings so far!
Also, I think it's pretty clear that Macrobiana had to fully mobilize its population, and that Wildebees getting shooed out of the military wasn't out of any glaring defect of hers, but because they were demobilizing after years of super destructive conflict.
Her problem is that she found great meaning in something her world didn't need anymore.
